This 6-week course focuses on understanding how light and shadow define form – and how to use tonal control to make your drawings feel three-dimensional and confident.
While this module naturally develops skills beyond simple outline drawing, beginners are very welcome. It’s taught step-by-step, with clear demonstrations and individual guidance so everyone progresses at their own pace. Each session combines structured teaching with supported studio time in a calm, small-group environment.
Throughout the six weeks you’ll explore
Understanding tonal values and contrast
Seeing and simplifying light and shadow
Building gradual transitions and strong dark areas
Controlling pencil pressure and mark-making
Using graphite and charcoal effectively
Creating depth and space within a composition
Developing a resolved tonal study
Who is it for?

Students progressing from Drawing Foundations
Anyone looking to strengthen observational skills
Artists preparing to move into portrait or painting modules
By the end of the six weeks you’ll have a clearer understanding of how tone creates form and depth – and greater confidence in your drawing ability.
